Newbie from Napa here!
Hi all! Finally have activated account and can post!
My name is Patty and I live in Napa county (american canyon to be exact). I just purchased a 2009 GSX-R 600 in January so I am a newbie! I actually have had an M-1 for just over 20 years as I got it way back when I bought a scooter. That was my first foray on 2 wheels. I rode that Honda 150cc daily to work in Los Angeles and up here in Bay Area when I moved up here in 1994. I rode that scooter into the ground and had given up riding altogether, got married..and now (as of tomorrow) divorced. My divorce gift was getting back into 2 wheels! A Gixxer friend of mine helped me buy it and has been coaching me when he can..but I still need more time on the bike. The weather since buying the bike has not been ideal!!
I would love to eventually get out and meet other riders and do some group riding once I have more experience. I know I am not ready for large group rides yet, but wondering if any of you ladies mentor new riders? I would love to get out with just one or two at the most and get comfy being out in the rode with other riders. Are there any members in my general area willing to do this? Exchange for wine?? (I work in wine industry!) LOL!
Anyway...hopefully can get to know you all..perhaps come to a meeting to start and see what the group is about. I am just learning about the various groups out there and seeing which may be a good fit for me..distance and personality wise!!
Cheers!
Patty

Re: Newbie from Napa here!
Patty, welcome to board and back into riding! I live in Vallejo, and when my schedule permits I have no problems taking someone around on the local roads! Hopefully things will warm up here shortly, that nice break we had got me spoiled :)
I'm usually out a couple times a week for a ride (weather permitting) so feel free to shoot me a PM sometime!

Hi Patty, welcome to Curve Unit's forum! Can't wait to meet you and your new 600. Maybe when the weather gets better a couple of the girl will meet up with you for a ride. I wouldn't mind riding out there my self. Other then that, can't wait to see you on one of our rides sooner than later.

The wine industry huh? Mmmmmm... (Lightbulb!)
Curve Unit is having fundraiser in March. Perhaps we can get a couple of donations. We'd love to meet you and see if you can help us.
And of course, welcome to the forum, congrats on the new GSX, and good luck with the huge changes in you life.

Re: Newbie from Napa here!
Congrats on the new Gixxer purchase Patty. I bet you're excited to experience the road in a whole new light. Transitioning from a scooter to a sportbike is a big step, but it totally sounds like you're sooooooooo ready for spice in your life. :D
Stoked to hear you're doing your homework on groups/clubs available to you. We often ride Berryessa which isn't too far from your location, and as Heather (Hekele) stated, I'm sure a small group of us would be more than happy to meet up with you in your neck of the woods once the damn sun decides to stay for more than one day.
Our next group ride is Sunday, March 13 followed by a CU charity event on Sunday, March 20. We would love to see you at both, so please feel free to PM any of us to set up meet spots for you. It's always better to roll out with another rider.

Re: Newbie from Napa here!
Hi ladies! Thanks so much for the warm welcome and would LOVE to get out and ride with some of you ladies soon in the area.
Yesterday I went out for my first long ride and my gixxer buddy and "coach" came with me so he had my back. He is really not the most patient person I am learning but we managed to make it from American Canyon to Rutherford and over to Silverado Trail and back home. I had drop #3 on my bike coming out of the parking lot at Rutherford Grill. THANKFULLY my gixxer buddy who also stunts insisted on cages on my bike so my 3 drops to date have resulted in only minor scratches on the mirrors! I managed to do that panic clutch dump/stall vicious circle at a traffic light twice. My "coach" doesn't understand why I have that problem. I practice it around my neighborhood and finally get the clutch/throttle control...BUT when you add the pressure of being in traffic, waiting at a light with cars behind you and you panic a bit. That is why I insisted having someone on my back blocking cars from riding up my butt! Overall..it was a blast to finally get out there and have a beautiful ride upvalley.
We actually videotaped the ride upvalley..if you want to see me in action..check out a section on YouTube I just posted:

I bought the GoPro HD camera as a learning tool and it is cool to get rides on video!
Sabrina...I would be happy to donate some wine to your fundraiser..is the fundraiser after the next meeting or would I need to get it to you before then? Would I be totally lame if I actually drove my car to the meeting? Don't think I would be ready for the group ride in just a few weeks..so perhaps I can just attend the meeting to meet some of you! Now I just need to know where and when!

Re: Newbie from Napa here!
You are more than welcome to come to the meeting via car, train, plane or even scooter. How you get there doesn't matter. It'll give you a chance to see what we're all about. We'd love to meet you.
The time and place will be posted up on our "Ride with Us" forum soon, so please keep your eyes open for the announcement.
Our ride and meetings are always on the 2nd Sunday of the month. We take turns planning the ride routes and meeting places.
Our fundraiser will be on the 20th (see the flyer on the Main Page), and this year we're hoping to offer some adult beverages to those (over 21) participants. Anything you could help us out with, donation wise, would be very much appreciated. We'd also love to have you come out and join us for the event too, if your schedule permits.
Good luck with your riding/training. It sounds like you're doing it the right way.
Thank you so much for your willingness to help!

How AWSOME is THAT! wow! Live, Love and Laugh again oh and RIDE!!!! I totally understand about the whole "clutch/throttle" thing. Well I have a semi automatic for this reason :) I usually ride in the back of the line so I am very patient, very cautious and we can just take our time. I am excited to see you joining the forum and jealous of your new gixxer. I cannot wait to get my 2 wheels! So, with that no pressure hope to see ya ride soon.
Just Rollin

Re: Newbie from Napa here!
Welcome Patty!
I ride a scooter, it's a suzi burgman 400, and I love it. Won't be on two wheels tomorrow due to the recall on the bike but will be speeding down the road in my MINI S.
I have to tell you these women are outstanding. Everyone I've had to the privilege to meet are exceptional, talented, and most impressive. I know that seems ridiculous since I've only had one outing with CurveUnit in January, but I've been around a little bit and I know what I think is accurate.
I'm a total noob. I just started riding two wheels last June. I'm getting better and more confident but still have a long way to go. The most important thing is to remember to ride your ride. You are fortunate to have found such a generous and understanding group to ride with. I'd be happy to meet up with you on 680 or whatever on a future ride. I'm in Antioch.
Looking forward to meeting you tomorrow,
Patty

ps. don't change your name. We've got the best name in the world. And you even spell it correctly... 8)
